1 Now

I am now a member of the Quantum Technology Laboratory at the University of Queensland, Brisbane headed by Prof. Andrew White. My PhD is focused on quantum information processing and optical quantum computing architecture (sounds great doesn’t it? It really is). I spend a long time in dimly lit rooms adjusting mirrors, lenses and playing with powerful lasers; I am an experimentalist. More on that soon…

Education:

  • Wondensfield Primary School, Wolverhampton
  • Heathpark High School, Wolverhampton
  • King Alfred High School, Somerset
  • University of Warwick, Warwickshire

That’s the boring stuff out of the way.

I became interested in physics from an early age (…yes I know you’ve heard all this before); I studied possibly the most typical post sixteen subjects as a male, mathematics, chemistry, physics and workshop. Let’s go to university and get a life. I started and finished an undergraduate course in physics at the University of Warwick, Coventry. I graduated in July 2008.

Sorry, that was also quite boring.

Undergraduate and masters research detailed here.

I met James Bennett during my first few days at Warwick, but decided through subliminal reasoning I should stay away. This probably had something to do with his sheepish hair (photos available on request) and constant personal flu epidemic his body was undergoing. After cutting off most of his hair and knocking back a few aspirins I deemed him worthy of my presence. We enjoyed a final year in a joint research project as part of Mark Newton’s diamond group, sitting around big magnets to watch electrons move around nitrogen defects; fun times. Here we concluded that James should stay in the UK for his PhD and I should move to the other side of the world…. hold on a minute…?
